I've run W2K since the beta 1 release and if you set an env variable in the
command prompt, it's immediately available for applications using the same
instance of the command prompt. Open another window and you do not have
access to the variable. Set it in the system applet and you have to reboot
before it's available because the variables only get loaded into system
memory on start-up. Why do you think Microsoft forces you to reboot after
installing software?
