Read 27.2 It is abundantly clear. If a player thinks a ball may be lost, he
may declare a provisional ball. He must hit the provisional before he, his
partner or their caddies leave the hitting area to begin the search. By
rule, a player may not search for a ball, then declare he's going back to
the tee to hit a provisional. He must play the provisional before starting
the search.
