Tom,

It does make theoretical sense.  My explanation would be that since you are able to more easily hang onto your club, you are likely gripping it softer and there is reduced tension in your hands, forearms, etc. and this results in the ability to apply more power at impact and more distance.

Subject: ShopTalk: Grip size

Hi;

Like any golfer who romances the game, I'm always on the lookout for a way to hit longer, straighter tee shots. Over the past half-century I suppose I've tried every method devised by mfrs, tinkerers, and by myself. I've always been able to hit it pretty straight but not particularly far. Over the past couple of years I've hit roughly 15 different driver heads with an uncounted number of shafts installed. I've hit OEM's - Ping, Taylor, Cleveland, Nicklaus, Callaway (in 3 different versions,) among others. I've hit illegal component heads from Golfsmith, Integra, etc. My current favorite is a 9.5° Titleist 975J with a stock firm flex, ultralite shaft. I've also installed 4 shafts in the head. Nothing changed my direction or distance significantly.

So, a few days ago, I removed the Winn grip I had installed, which had replaced a Tour Velvet, which had replaced a TV wrap, which had replaced a 50th Anniversary, which had replaced, etc., etc.  I installed a Midsize Tour Velvet. What a difference! I'm hitting the ball at least 10 - 15 yds longer than I did with any other grip I ever used. I am amazed.

I know full-well how to measure for grip size. I guess I've installed a couple thousand of them over the years. I've nearly always used 58 mm grips on 58 mm shafts, 60 mm grips on 60 mm shafts for myself. I've nearly always used a single wrap of duct tape under a single wrap of masking tape under a wrap of double-stick tape, with an extra wrap of masking tape under the right hand. That configuration fit my hands theoretically and empirically. For whatever reason, the mid-size with a single wrap seems to make it a hell of a lot easier to hang on to the driver, and gives a lot more confidence when really swinging hard. I realize it makes no theoretical sense, but there it is. It works for me.

Interestingly, I did the same thing on a 7 wood I'd been having trouble with. It didn't work!

Golf is a 4-letter word for a reason.
