The question keeps coming up about 1 x 42 sanders vs. 1 x 30 sanders for
ferrule turning, so I did some research and thought I'd share the results.
This is all about finishing ferrules. The speed of the belt (Surface
Feet per Minute) is a factor, as is the size of the machine and the
availability of the DuraBrite felt belts. The 1 x 42 sanders have much
more room to manuver the head and the DuraBrite belts are only available
in 1 x 42. I mention the DuraBrites (available at GS) because I have
heard nothing but high praise for them.
I have the Surface Feet per Minute for each machine listed. In come
cases it came from their specs, in others it was computed. (drive pulley
diameter and motor speed are needed). I also listed the current "street
prices" in US dollars.
