You need a rheostat to vary the speed of the belt.

Good thought.  I've never tried to find a source for the pulleys, which
are really more like rubber wheels.  The other problem is trying to get
enough adjustment to take up the belt slack that would result from a
smaller wheel.

I'm guessing that the "eBay 1x30" at 2,635 SFM would be an even better
start.  Using the same motor speed I calculate that the eBay's drive
wheel is approximately 3" vs. the Harbor Freight's 3.75"

I remember looking at a Harbor Freight model and
thinking how easy and cheap it would be to change the
pulleys, maybe even swap them and use the same drive
belt, to slow it down.  Just a thought for the bargain
conscious.
