I don't think this should be made more complicated than it is. I can instruct a teenager to do this chore in about 15 minutes and with about 15 minutes of practice he/she is an expert!
When we are really backed up with assembly jobs we can use one of the 30 machines with irons. The wood heads are so large these days we find that the 42 inch machines are the only ones to use. Our machines are modified by either removing the belt backup plate or shortening this piece.
I don't understand the questions about belt tension. The sanders have springs that do this automatically.


I mentioned the DuraBrite belts because I have heard nothing but rave
reviews from those who use them.
Some small sanding machines will not allow the use of these belts due to their thickness. I have never had a problem with the linen belts either for their effectiveness, cost or longevity.
If it works we don't fix it!
 
Simply put the discussion is fruitless IMHO and it is repeated on an annual basis.
