Tom, I followed your advise and installed shorewall with the standalone instructions you gave me.
It initially installed and appeared to be working (see $ sudo shorewall
start) on the attached file.
When I rebooted the computer and typed sudo shorewall start in the
terminal window this is what I saw:
Compiling...
Compiling /etc/shorewall/zones...
ERROR: No network interfaces defined
What did I do wrong? My shorewall settings are on the attached file.

I'm going to give you the same advice that I did the last time.
Disregard the HOWTO you are using and use
http://www.shorewall.net/standalone.htm
The HOWTO that you are trying to follow is for creating a two-interface
router; you have a standalone computer.
