I already tried that and it didn't work. Although it's conceivable that
the not working was actually because of some other build problem that I
hadn't understood at that point. I didn't spend long investigating that
option further, because I had no strong reason to believe that a tarball
at 8ca3eccad76db2d741a78de6fe8ec30d9b6788a8 _ought_ to be compatible
with one at b5aec2bd3df736216e86eae28e278172d3ba3362. So I thought it
better to pursue the b5aec2bd3df736216e86eae28e278172d3ba3362 snapshot
approach.
