!!
Sorry about the rushed mail and lack of details.
I was obviously unsure of the room number and went to
the wrong one myself, it was on the fourth floor.
Well I kind of wanted to share what went on during the
meeting, it disgusted me thoroughly.
!!
Basically, the guy (CFIO of the Business school along with
a Dean) answered students' questions regarding technology
and the business school, I'll detail his answers to some
of my questions:
After stating that their mission is to give students the
advantages of the best education available while mirroring
the corporate world, I asked why, then, is UNIX not represented
(a small representation) in the form of UNIX labs and/or
classes related. He simply stated that 97% of the world's
desktops are running Windows, and that there is no demand (by
faculty or students) for UNIX. I accused him of reading his
stats off microsoft.com; then we moved on...
CFIO_guy--;
He said that he has to do what is the most cost effective;
"But Linux is free."
He responded with "No, Linux is not free, the image may be free
to download, but it is not free." I failed to see his logic
there, I informed him that UT could buy one CD for $2 and make
as many copies as needed; he just shrugged his shoulders and
repeated it was not free.
CFIO_guy--;
On a talking point about providing web publishing server space
for Business students, I asked what kind of servers would be used
for this; he quicky answered with NT4.0.
"Are you going to tell me that this mirrors reality? NT4 webservers?"
He said a solid yes.
CFIO_guy--;
Then another student joined the fun, he introduced himself as a
"developer" who used to use UNIX a lot. He said he developed on
bevo (I assume a student shell machine?). Anyway, he said that
he had to "develop the crude UNIX C environment" and that
it is much too crude than the superior NT development environment.
I said that I know a lot of professionals that would adimently disagree;
he interrupted me with "It's a fact! UNIX is being phased out!!"
Possibly_your_future_boss--;
I kind of lost my temper here. It went downhill and I felt like
more of a trouble maker than a visionary, so I just left.
I'm thinking I am going to try to raise some interest in the UNICES
in the Business school, perhaps with flyers etc, but I need some
good stats (specifically as they apply to "corporate america" and
things like "UNIX vs NT" and/or "Linux vs NT") because what I've read
indicates a swell in UNIX. If someone could help that would be great.
It angers me to see blank faces in MIS students when I talk of UNIX,
these are supposed to be the future managers and heads of computer
industry firms, the guys who do know what UNIX is think it's
something being "phased out" by a superior NT.
Fear the Future,
