I worked as an IS manager for several years before fleeing from the real
world (again). 90% of the software industry is based upon the stupidity
of corporate IS managers. Just pick up any issue of Infoworld and check
out some of the comments IS managers surveyed make on this or that issue.
A lot of the elaborate rationale for using NT comes down to nothing more
profound than people are used to using Word and Excel, these programs
only run under Windows and Macintosh, and Macintosh was determined a long
time ago to be a platform "not serious enough" for the corporate
environment. How was the latter conclusion arrived at? Networkability?
I don't see it. User friendliness? I don't think so. Stability? Are
you joking? Let me repeat the original hypothesis: MIS managers are
stupid. The mac includes lot of frivolous icons and pictures, so it must
not be a serious enough machine for email, word processing, spreadsheets,
and database queries, which is what 99.9% of all business users use their
computers for (include web surfing and games, if you like). Oh well.
