If all you want to do is read email, you can just telnet to your other
box and use pine/elm/emacs or run your favorite X mail program remotely on
the 386's display. Communicator will run much better on your other
computer (which I'm assuming is better than a 386). The other route you
mentioned isn't that tough, the HOWTO's have everything in it, and I had
no trouble doing that sort of thing.
