I think the confusion is more a matter of semantics than RR's policy. I
went to RR's "self-install class" with a friend in the Early-Bird batch
(to help him install his gear) and that's when the tech told me that
RoadRunner only allows 1 *IP address* per client. That they do not support
firewalling or masqerading, but that they explicitly do not prohibit it.
If your internal net becomes visible, only then do you have a problem.
They do prohibit web-hosting by clients, as does any ISP I know of,
without a commercial account.
When I contacted them to price the commercial access their website
lists, and they told me there was no such creature, I threw a fit, and
they ended up connecting me to the account manager. I asked him to verify
what the tech at school had said, and he did. This was maybe six weeks
ago.
As far as not installing without Windows, all I had running when they
tested my line was my Slackware box. Again, they didn't support Linux, and
won't diagnose problems without MS output. The DO keep a link to the Linux
members' forum on the RR login page. Good enough for me.
Pretty much, if it's not a service they charge for, like web-hosting, and
it won't get them in dutch with FCC & friends, these guys don't much care.
It kind of boils down to the question of whether you think any ISP will
put up with you if they get annoyed, or even just don't like your smile.
I'm not terribly impressed with RoadRunner in any area, but they're fairly
cheap, fairly reliable, and fairly fast.
