Tom,
I just remembered how I fixed the problem. I switched the SB16 for a
different SB16. The original was the "Value" model CT4170, and I put in
an older card, a CT2940. Works like a champ.
I dunno why Debian didn't like the newer one; it worked just fine in
Slackware with the same kernel & settings. I just started fooling with
Debian, so I haven't a clue where to start tracking the difference.
I got another CT2940, though....
