Tom,
If I understand correctly, softoss is Linux' version of software-AWE32.
All I really know is that sound, especially au & midi, is much cleaner
with that module loaded.
I guess I wasn't clear about the spare I have - I'll trade ya straight up
if it comes to that. If you do get the one you have working, I'm REAL
interested in the results. Here's a couple of clues:
a) As you pointed out, it's a Debian thing. My CT4170 works great in
Slackware, not at all in Debian. (Potato release, BTW). Also BTW,in
Slackware "play" won't play .au files on the CT2940. "cat xx.au
>/dev/audio" works great, just not "play".
b) The error I got was the same; wrong size buffers.
c) The cards are _definitely_ not the same. CLabs has called 6 or 8
different chipsets "SB16". I can't see the chip on the older card right
now, but one's 1/2 in square & the other is over 1 inch....
d) It's not Debian's custom kernel. I was running 2.2.12 from kernel.org
on both distros.
e) isapnptools didn't help a damn bit.
Probably none of that's news, but just in case....
