I haven't used Mandrake, have they made any significant steps toward
improving the sysadmin tools over RedHat? I have used SuSE and
TurboLinux, and frankly both beat the pants off RedHat's tools.

The thing to do is contact the distributor for the distribution you want
to use, they will usually be willing to send cd-only kits (no book
included). If that doesn't work it would be more effective to order CDs
from cheapbytes than to make them yourself. Consider that you will have
to switch CDs in your burner <too> times at <long> time interval for a
total of too*long in front of your burner.

Consider also that coming from cheapbytes they will have the distro and
version silk-screened on them.

hmm... the interesting thing here is that most distros have these X-based
config utilities, to varying degress of success. All that I've seen have
a fairly easy to parse install (Debian being the notable exception).

There will be volunteers to help with the install part, so I'd say you
could go for a more complicated install (such as SuSE's, perhaps even
Debian's) in favor of better tools if you wanted. One thing is that as a
membership drive for Linux and especially SIGLinux, you should consider
promoting only a distribution for which you've got enough current
collective knowlege to field the neophyte questions you'll be stirring up.
It doesn't make sense to promote "Joe's Linux 1.0" if no-one on the list
uses it themselves to be able to help a total Linux novice.
