I keep forgetting to make sure the replies go to the list. For some

You should look at the linux from scratch stuff. Is not really building
a distro, but building a system. They've got a lot of stuff worked out
already, and it's for the most part a recepie type build. It does take
some time and some work, but, unless your an expert, it can also teach
you a lot about the system underneath the RPM's and DEB's.
And you can build it on a spare partition (you have to have a working
system to get it going) and dual-boot between it and your favorite
distro. That's the way I do it.
