We used the second (single x-server) solution. I've seen people who run
two x-servers at a time, but I frankly don't know any of the details on
how they did it...I don't think it was hard. This was before framebuffers
were all the rage, I think.

As far as the rest of that stuff (resolutions and such), that wasn't an
issue for us...we had two identical video card and two identical monitors.
It sounded like xinerama was pretty darn flexible when it came to
different resolutions (at least in theory), although you're right about
all monitors needing to have a common color depth. The dead-space you
talked about is just something you have to live with (barring some sort of
overlap scheme, which I think is supported).
