Let’s not forget that startup founders are already unique, they are
extraordinarily driven, paranoid, very detailed oriented, unable to delegate,
don’t sleep, are obsessive and the like and this is even before the startups
starts! And then the startup and people and investors and partners and tech and
users and and and just pile on..

Thanks Bhaskar, this was my guess as well. From what I see here vs the folks
I've interacted with in Berlin when I lived there, culture definitely plays a
huge role. There's a lot of silent suffering here given the stigma around
mental health in general, but more so for people who are perceived as
"leaders", "successful", etc. I find that they are suffocating not being able
to give themselves the time to even acknowledge it.

Most of these folks self select into this career and know that it is stressful,
but just how stressful is visible to them only when they are in it - the stress
then acts as a trigger for previously held insecurities and mental health
issues (which for us Indians is generally at a higher baseline).

But how is this sustainable, it makes me wonder.

It’s a bad state to be in. Being off the wall helps. At this moment with all
the cash flow and investment challenges, mental health doesn’t even rise to the
top but it’s there in all startup founders. Curiously enough, without hard core
data, I think desi founders get hit worse. My Israeli firm, or the Brazilian
firm. The founders are stressed but it’s not bad. But most of the desi founders
are bad enough that it impacts business.

Hi Aditi,

One of the members here, and my talented colleague, Shrabonti has done a
fantastic article on this topic:

Hello All!

I am a bit of a lurker and rarely post here so forgive me for showing up out of
nowhere. Also, this is a dummy email account so excuse the name etc (real name
is Aditi Raghuram). I wanted to reach out to the community and get your take on
a topic that is only recently gaining some traction (at least in organizational
psychology circles).

Specifically, I'm curious to hear your opinions, experiences, and exposure to
mental health issues in startup founders and how it may have impacted the
person ( stuff that was observable and showed up in their decisions and
actions) and the startup. So, have you or anyone you know experienced mental
health issues while leading a startup? What steps did the founder take to
address the issue, if at all?

I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences on this topic. A little bit
about my curiosity on this topic from my background - I am an organizational
psychologist and coach leaders individually, do group coaching sessions mostly
for startups, and consult for startups on culture and well-being.

Thanks!

Aditi
