Many photographers have made do with very simple (not necessarily
cheap) equipment. Cartier-Bresson, for example, used a Leica with no
appendages. So did Robert Capa.
I think it depends on the type of photography one is doing.
Photojournalism requires quite simple equipment. But, if you are going
to be photographing wildlife (say, birds) or sports, you better have a
good lens with image stabilization. If you are doing fashion
photography, you better have excellent film, backdrops and lights.
