If you are driving, (at an easy pace) it should take you 7-8 hours from Bangalore including snack stops at the MTR Hotel after Channapatna or Kamat Lokaruchi. (I wonder if they still make those awesome Maddur vadas at the Maddur railway station canteen).
That place after Channapatna is an interesting study in the creative use of branding. It is not really an MTR place at all. Shivalli restaurant (it's real name) is merely a place that stocks tons of MTR branded products. All the signs to the restaurant say 'MTR Shivalli'. According to cognoscenti it was started by a chef from the famous MTR restaurant. Thaths -- "Grand Funk Railroad paved the way for Jefferson airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson starship.
