Just this afternoon Cheeni was telling me about how yesterday a *cop*
said he could park along a line of cars, right by a no parking sign.
Why on earth was Cheeni asking the cop whether he could park near a no parking
sign? Sounds like the cop was having some serious fun at Cheeni's expense.
There was no empty parking space to be seen anywhere in the area, and
there were a bunch of hungry looking cops standing around. Since I
didn't want to cruise around a one-way street looking for open space, I
rolled down the window and asked one of them as politely as I could in
Kannada about free spaces and he pointed me to a line of vehicles
further down the road and said, "try there" or some such. The no parking
sign wasn't visible from where he was pointing - and by the time I had
reached the sign it was too late to turn back since it was a one-way street.
I was emboldened by the presence of at least 50 or more vehicles parked
in a neat single row, not obstructing the traffic in any way at all. I
figured the "no parking" sign didn't matter, as is often common in
Bangalore. I squeezed into a tiny space, making sure I respected the
additional "no parking in front of the gate" sign on a nearby building.
I returned to find a cop dutifully sticking tickets onto every vehicle
in the area.
I guess the cops were shooting fish in a barrel that evening.
