Human reasoning is one of the criteria for selection of the memes. If an idea/theory/meme fits with the data and/or people believe it, the meme has a better chance of propagation. As far as as the ideas and books are concerned, authors have a somewhat "vested interest" in pushing their ideas so the data might be carefully selected to fit their theory sometimes. -- Vinayak
