I do not have facts, so this is just conjecture, but didn't the BJP come up to power for the first time as a direct outcome of the Babri Masjid demolition? Is it not plausible that the demolition was in fact engineered to toss them into the media spotlight, where they could then peddle a unified Hindu identity and ride it to power? That such a unified identity did not exist before and could not possibly be sustained, and that it is therefore vital for them to keep the tempo going?

Like I said, just conjecture, but think about it.
