I do not know what sort of a guest you are entertaining and whether your choice is limited to classier restaurants. That said, here are some of my favorite eateries in Chennai: 1. Bombay Halwa House near Luz Corner (opposite to Shanti Vihar / Vidhya Mandir). Their samosas are incredibe. 2. Ramakrishna Sweets in Parrys Corner (near the YMCA). 3. Murudis. There used to be a branch in Adayar and one in Mylapore (near Luz corner - opposite to the pillayar temple). Some of the best meals I've had. 4. Dakshin in Adayar Park has some excellent South Indian food. 5. There is a great Chettinad food in one of the Connemara restaurants. They also have a decent vegetarian selection. 6. Arusivai Natarajan's restaurant (http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/mp/2003/07/21/stories/2003072100230400.htm - check to make sure you have the right address. this article is a few years old) 7. Karpagambal mess in Mylapore. There is quite a good list at http://wikitravel.org/en/Chennai#Eat Thaths -- Homer: He has all the money in the world, but there's one thing he can't buy.
