what do you think of the iPhone?

Having purchased one today, I can now speak definitively about the device.

The interface is every bit as slick as the now-ubiquitous online demos
make it seem. The touch-screen is nearly as intuitive as they could
have made it. Paging left or right, up or down is done by moving your
finger in the direction you want to go. zooming in, or out is a
simple double-tap on the screen. I'm having a slight learning curve
issue with the on-screen keyboard, but I'm certain that will pass (the
word-suggestion feature seems to occasionally miss the mark, but is
helpful enough that I'm not about to remove it from my settings).

It's going to take me time to work through all the features, so far
I've surfed the web with it, checked the weather forecast, and surfed
over to the BBC website for the latest news. A call to my parents,
and saving their number both on the iPhone, and syncing it to the
address book on my Mac shows the syncronization feature to be
transparent and flawless. Web surfing over AT&T's network is a tad
slow, but the pages display with a fidelity which simply must be seen.
I'll have to wait until monday to try websurfing over the built-in
wi-fi.

As an existing AT&T customer, switching from my Nokia, to the iPhone
only means a $20/month increase in my phone bill, for the data
service, and renewing my existing calling plan for two years. Not a
lot of pain there, which is good, because at $599, I'm going to be
feeling it for a few weeks.

Google Maps on the iPhone is a joy to behold. No GPS? No problem,
presuming you're in an urban setting,

Are there downsides to the iPhone? Sure, but at the moment, this
device is all full of shiny newness, and all the sleek blackness of
the monolith from "2001: A Space Odyssey" when it's off (This is also
something totally unique. there is practically no apparent interface
when the phone is off). In short, the iPhone will be an object of
fascination for owners and anyone they encounter (Like the people at
the Thai restaurant i ate dinner at tonight, who BEGGED me to take the
phone from it's box and show it to them).
