I believe it does but of a different type.

The idea in not to replace a mouse with a joystick

The idea is to design a mouse that is comfortable for a human hand, and yet
perform all the standard mouse functions (and not functions like cueing and
arming missiles) while flying an aeroplane.

That means a flat, mouse-like base with an optical or other movement sensing
apparatus, and a superstructure that is kind to the hand. The current
half-kidney/half egg models are no good IMO. A structure that allows you to
wrap your hand around comfortably, while your wrist is supported on a part
that is able to bear pressure, and wrist twisted about half-way is the ideal
way to use a hand. None of these requirements is adequately met in any
current mouse that I know of.

A joystick is only one possible shape. It could even take the shape of a
handle such as that found on an electric iron, but set at a suitable angle.
A knuckleduster seems like a good prototype for the size needed.
