The information about the road between Belgaum and Bangalore is about a
month old and my cousins who did that trip are really regretting that they
tried.
My experience of driving around between Bombay and the south has been that
the road conditions vary from year to year. The roads in Punjab and
Rajasthan
are generally maintained well and should pose no problems. You'll get to see
many interesting sights including assorted versions of regional jugaads
(home
made vehicles - the most interesting ones that I have seen are combination
sugarcane crushers and transport.) The roads in Gujarat are good for the
most
part but start to deteriorate as you approach Bombay (because of the heavy
truck traffic.) From Bombay to Pune is the finest road you'll get to drive
in India -
the expressway - watch out for the idiots who don't know how to use a six
lane
highway. The road from Pune to Belgaum is also supposed to be in good shape
but the from there on it gets really bad - probably because of road widening
or
reconstruction. If you can afford to wait for a few months the situation may
change.
