Deepa, there are thousands of special-interest or restricted mailing lists on the Internet. This isn't always because of some sense of superiority. It's mostly because of some shared interests. If you ran a photography discussion mailing list, for instance, you'd expect members to have some interest in the topic, and posts about gardening would certainly be off-topic. It's the principle of free association.
To add to what Madhu said, I'd recommend a (re)look at David Bennahum's classic article on mailing lists, from 1997 or so.
