Not at all a mind trick.  Simply a way to aggregate more funding.

Feel free to write checks directly to tulir if you like, without trusting your 
appetite to the tender mercies of whichever chefs they get hold of.

They are doing some pretty useful work and will use the cash responsibly.

Is the implication then that the silk-lister is a valid object of such a
campaign? I would prefer to imagine that we are a more enlightened lot and
don't need mind tricks.
