I don’t think that is added by Gmail. Here is what my subject says "Re: [silk] Delhi meetup?”. I think this is added by the mailing list server. But if people are using gmail and have opted to view as conversations, then it is possible that gmail adds both threads to the same conversation. I do think that it is improbable though.
