My understanding (from ordering pure metals and gases as part of my
previous job) is that 99.9% pure is "three nines" (3N) pure silver,
and 99.999 pure is what you would call "five nines" (or 5N) pure.

God, I hope I've got it right! That's something I worked with for a
long time. I'd hate to have been mistaken all these years, or forgot
already!

That's the reason for my question. I have ready access to inexpensive
99.9% (three nines or 3N) pure "fine" silver wire from a jewelers
supply. I want to know if that's good enough, or if I need a
"reagent" grade purity like 4N or better.

This gives me hope, since for silver to be made extremely pure
drives the cost up above that of the "spot" price of the metal.
Dealers won't buy/sell the ultra-pure grades of anything since it's
not useful for monetary value.

I just called a coin dealer I know, and he refers to "fine" as 99.9%
or better, and sometimes 99.99%. He also said that "pure" is
generally considered to be 99.99% or better.

Thanks Scott. I appreciate the help. Hope we can straighten ourselves
out. If anybody has an opinion, or better yet an authoritative one,
I'd like to here it! I'll keep digging on my end.

Mike
