Ah well, I misunderstood you then, sorry. I never used pain to train, though. My horse never had a bit in her mouth when I rode (and she'd never been ridden before I got her). My brothers used one on her, and they both got thrown hard. They said, "that crazy horse of yours is dangerous!". But she loved me. :) The painless way takes a lot of patience, but to me it's well worth it.
