I think wall wart is specific enough. I've never seen one that wasn't a power supply employing at least a step-down transformer and rectifier.

You must not have seen very many, not nearly enough to think
you are an expert. Some are what you say, and some are not.
Things are changing, I go back many years for the thousands I have used. Must have 100 or more in my two offices at this time.

A lot of people just call them "AC adapters", which is also specific
enough, since that's what many manufacturers call them.

True, Yes I understand that. Again, I doubt if you are anyone can tell me much I do not know about the Critters.
Critters is about as descriptive as "Wall Wart".

Many manufactures do not know if they are using

RS-232 Serial port communications or RS-485.

Likely they do not know what they are selling either.
 Many do not.

Ask me, .......... I know.

Radio Shack sells a wall wart with selectable output voltage which they refer to as a "universal power supply". Now *that* is a serious misuse of a term, IMO. :)
Yes, indeed, I have seen the and I have one or two.
Some have a selection of plugs to fit most anything. Very nice.

Never seen a Radio Shack that knew anything much ?

  Have you ?

Of course this thing about terms,

Proper Use, Mis-Use, and Hear Say Evidence,

will drive a genius crazy, including me, you , and Einstein. <grin>

The English must be a lousy language,

It has been butchered, chopped, shredded , and spit out again.

How can we know anything?

Once I worked for a World Wide company.
I called Tech Support with a question.

They simply said, "we think you are right".

I decided then and there, I have no technical support.
I have to figure it out, or beat my head against the wall until I can't.

If I cannot fix it, I have to explain to the customer some complex and technical reason why I cannot. Try to fool him if I can.

It rarely and seldom happened.

Wayne
