Howdy Wayne,

It seems you keep mistaking me for someone else.

What kind of wall warts have you seen that were different (oops, maybe
we should take this to the OT list before we get scolded)?

That's true. Probably because marketing rarely communicates well with
engineering.

No, LOL, Radio Shack people never seem to know much of anything.
I stopped going there years ago because of that. They were pretty cool
back in the Tandy Computer days, but now they just want to sell DVD
players and cell phones.

You're quite right about that. Sanskrit or Latin would probably be
better languages for tech types. Sadly, I'm not fluent in either, so I struggle
like everyone else.

Exactly! I get occasional tech support from more experienced people I
meet online or in person, but almost never from someone whose job is
tech support. Weird, isn't it?

The only real fiasco I ever had was once, years ago, this poor guy
needed me to put a starter in his Chevy Monza. All he knew was, "it's
the starter, the shop says they can't fix it", and of course he was a
friend and he was broke. Trouble was, the shop that failed to fix it
had broken the starter bolt off in the engine block. Then, in spite of
generous applications of propane torch and liquid wrench I managed to
break the E-Z-Out off in the bolt (now there's a real misnomer,
"E-Z-Out")! I had to pull the engine and take it to a machine shop so
they could use a metal disintegrator to remove the *&%$ E-Z-Out
and the bolt.
Cost me waaay to much, renting an engine crane and paying the machine
shop, but I got it running in the end. I never imagined replacing a
starter on an American car could ever become such a hassle.

Nowadays I do a bit more investigation before I agree to fix something
for someone else, especially if I'm not the first person to try it. :)

Cheers,
indi
