I'm glad you found out about vitamin D here. I found out when my doctor tested me and my level was 14. That was January 2008. I got mine up to 55 by taking 2,000 to 3,000 IU per day D3 and as soon as it was warm enough, I spent 15 to 20 minutes lying in the sun with minimal clothing, turning over 1/2 way, two or three times a week. I live in SC, so we have some warm days early.
I'd read that it takes a few months to build up your vitamin D level, but I can't find where I read that now. Makes sense, because it goes down slowly, too, so you store it up in the warm weather for later. Since vitamin D works with calcium and magnesium, you should supplement those, too. My daily vitamin wasn't going to cut it during the flu season so following suggestions I ordered some for myself and smaller dosage for the kids. I've been taking 2000IU daily for over 3 weeks. Today I got results from my physical blood test on Vit D and it was 25! The doctor called in a prescription for 50,000/week. Does Vit D take time to build up or was I simply not taking enough do you think? I also wanted to say thanks to those that had the Vit D discussion. I would not have thought to check otherwise.
