I would see if soaking in a tub with a couple of cups of Epson salt would help. Epson salt is magnesium sulfate. This should relax the muscles and help if he is magnesium deficient. Since he was taking calcium maybe the calcium/magnesium balance was upset. This could cause muscle tightening and spasms. Check the medications he is taking for the COPD and anything like statin drugs etc. These can cause side effects. If taking statin drugs then stop, or supplement with CoQ10.
