  Hi Bruce,

I was RCAF. After Uplands, I went to Sept Isles, Quebec, a DEW line
  site.

They had a AN/FPS-27 Search Radar to look for Russian bombers coming
over the North Pole. The idea was to shoot them down in Canada so
the fallout from the nuclear explosions wouldn't reach the States:

This thing was a monster. Each component, like the power supply,
transmitter, receiver, and operator consoles had its own floor. The
"cut-away" picture in the link above is missing one entire floor.

I forget the output power. I thought it was 25 megawatts but I can't
find any spec. Anyway, I didn't work on the radar system, although
all my budies did and I visited the place often. My job was
maintaining the UHF communications gear in a separate building. I
really enjoyed the two years there, then I was off to NATO in Europe
for the rest of my tour. That was also fantastic, but the cold war
could have turned radioactive at any moment, so you really had to
  watch your step.

Those were the good old days:)

  Thanks,

  Mike Monett
