Hope you know how much the help is appreciated. I will try to cover as much as I can, in answer to your questions, and try not to leave anything out.
The area: We are in Des Moines, Iowa. It is a metro area of roughly 400,000. Our specific neighborhood is at the very edge of an old coal mine, roughly 20=30 feet from the back door. We are within a few miles of the airport, and close to several military bases. This is an older and established neighborhood, with most of the residents having been in the area for their entire lives 50-80 years. The dogs: Michael, a Boston Terrier, died two and a half years ago of congestive heart failure (vet diagnosis). We treated him with heart drugs for about 8-9 months before loosing him. He was about 9 when he died. He also went blind. Bud (picture attached), also a Boston Terrier (exact age unknown - believed to be about 6-7 now) has irregular heart rates, and is starting to retain water around the heart muscles, intolerance to heat, humidity, or strenuous activity. Showing signs of congestive heart failure, being treated too with atenolol (beta blocker), and water pills. Bud is also now going blind. The neighbors: (1) Lorraine was in her 70's, WF. She has cancer that was radiated at a local hospital, underwent inpatient and outpatient therapy, and all was under control. She went to hosp for her final checkup and bloodwork, and was sick within a few days, VERY sick, back to the hospital, and then died at hospice. They said she had picked up a hospital infection, but no one ever agreed on exactly what it was. She died of congestive heart failure, about a year and a half ago. (2) Francis, was a WW2 vet, but in good health up until he got sick. He had had emphysema for years, but was still quite active and had it under control. He started having breathing trouble one afternoon, and went to the SAME local hospital, for help with breathing. Came home and was OK. Got an infection within a few days and died of congestive heart failure at a nursing home. Francis died within a month of Lorraine. (3) Don: Was 64 (WM) when he died of congestive heart failure, at home. He also had had cancer, was treated and went into remission. A couple of days after a hospital outpatient checkup, he got sick, started having heart problems, and went into congestive heart failure. He lived for about 6-8 months before dying about two years ago. Not sure of any underlying cause for him. (4) Me: WF 49. Diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue 1984 after a heart attack, had developed Raynauds a few years before. Have had multiple episodes of congestive heart failure (most not real severe so far). Had Rheumatic Fever, and was exposed to polio in the 50's when numerous relatives were sick. Treated at the same hospital as the neighbors, when I had the heart attack. Never really ever got over it. Am in the process of having bad teeth removed, and am certain there are no abscessed teeth which could be causing a problem. Have had hubby's teeth checked top to bottom, being aware of the heart/teeth connection. Also have had other assorted health problems. The blood work, has generally shown a major deficiency in the blood/salt levels, with salt being very low. Also positives frequently for epstein barr virus. Very low cholesterol levels. (5) Hubby. Had not had one single health problem, since having his tonsils out at age 4. Last winter when he was shoveling, he started developing weird heart beats. Called the doc, took him right over, he was literally gray in color. He had not had a heart attack, but they were at a loss as to why his heart beats were so irregular. He has not been the same since. Is being treated with beta blockers, and a mild antidepressant for this. Has slightly high cholesterol. Buds teeth are fine, and Francis, and Lorraine both had dentures. I have seen figures somewhere that indicate our state has the highest number of disabled people in the nation, and watch this one with curiosity. In the work I do (part time) I have contact with a lot of people and am aware that there are major pockets of Chronic Fatigue and fibro outbreaks in this area, enough that several doctors have began commenting on it. Something is wrong here, not sure if it is with circulating hospital viruses, the water, air, ground, or something else. Have tried to be very careful not to also jump to conclusions. Its my guess there is some underlying bacterial or viral process in this area, but am unable to pin it down. I cannot honestly say also that we all have the same infection or virus or whatever, it just seems coincidental and has me a little spooked.
