Sounds about right. Eight or ten oz would need about 30 to 45 minutes, so a
quart would probably take a couple hours. You may be going just a little longer
in time than you have to. Try backing off 15 minutes and see what happens.
Golden is OK, clear is better.

Nothing but silver goes in the water? I mean, not the connecting wires or clips?
Did you clean the bars of any surface oils or contaminants?
I would think you would see grey or black matter rather than gold.
