Two Children Suspected to be Carrying Polio Virus After Dose

                            The Times of India reports two five-year old
children in the Orissa' Kendrapara
                            district of India are suspected to be carrying polio
virus after having received
                            pulse polio dose in March, this according to health
department sources.

                            Manidipa Chakravorty of Kharidasahi village and
Rajesh Mallick of Pabitrapada
                            village, both fell ill after being administered the
dose on March 26 and are now
                            under treatment, the sources said.

                            UNICEF and WHO experts are monitoring the condition
of the two children,
                            they said.

                            Additionally, the district medical officer D P
Panigrahi has neither confirmed
                            nor denied that the children were afflicted with
polio.

                            Medical tests including electromyography and nerve
conduction were done on
                            the suspected victims and the final report of
experts of S C B Medical College
                            Hospital, Cuttack, was awaited, the sources said.

                            Another test was being done at the central
laboratory at Calcutta to confirm
                            the virus, they added.

                            A senior health department official said the matter
is being thoroughly
                            investigated by the department and who authorities.
