Thanks Dan. I forgot to mention that I have been heating the DW to just
under boiling and by the time the generating process starts I think it is
probably down to 150 degrees or so. I'm not sure of the eact temp. I'll take
your advice and do those measurements.

     I also have a PWT meter from Hanna.  I have found it of great help in
measuring the DW or deionized water I use for a start solution.  I recommend
trying to find a DW that reads 1.0 or less, that's 1PPM.  If you can find DW
with a reading of .5 or less...great!  
     After you have brewed your CS take another measurement and subtract
your initial measurement of the DW and presto you should have an approximate
PPM of your CS.
P.S.   I would not recommed adding salt to the DW.  The purer the better. 
Heating to about 100 F speeds up the process nicely.
