Decent batteries (alkaline) will probably come closer to $8 for 3. Cheap, but
the cheapest ones  (carbon) will probably last a only week or two.

There ARE those that refuse to learn ANYTHING. Of course they're going to pay
through the nose to be accommodated. You make the choices you want to live with.
If I didn't want to be bothered, I'd price my services high, too.
