yes, you contaminated the water with the charcoal.  Think about it.  You
started with distilled water which was probably 1 ppm or better, then ran it
through an aggragate of chared wood, which contains lots of impurities,
salts, minerals and so forth. I am surprised you could get it down that low
after doing that.
