Anyone can file for a patent. You can even have a patent pending sticker on mountain air. That doesn't mean it will be approved or that you'll get the patent.
Even if you do get the patent, it can be meaningless and unenforceable. A patent only means you have a registered basis for litigation, but doesn't mean that you'll win in court. A patent search only serves as an indication that you might win if you decide to fight it out with an infringer. I've seen a few patents issued for processes that have been in common use for many years.
