Mike,
I have an inexpensive countertop distiller from http://www.wholesalewaterdistillers.com/distiller-water/american-water-distillers/love-water-distiller.htm I had heard some bad things about them not getting the water pure enough, so I told them I needed it for making CS, and they said I could return it if the performance wasn't good enough. At the time I was still trying to figure out exactly what my problem with yellow CS was, and wasn't sure a distiller would help or that I would like it, however, I like being able to double distill when needed. When this one finally goes, I will invest in a better distiller, but at first, not knowing, I went with cheap. For household uses and drinking, I distill hot tap water. Most of the time this DW needs to be run through again for CS making purposes. At certain times of year filtered cold tap water can be distilled once and be fine, when it isn't and needs to be double distilled anyway, I use hot tap water as the processing time is less. It is a bit of trouble to clean and fill the distiller, decant and store in other bottles, but not nearly as inconvenient as lugging home gallon after gallon of bottled DW. And at a cost in electricity of less than 25cents per gallon, it is economical too. Another issue here is no recycling for all those dozens of plastic bottles, they added significantly to our trash output. When they were recyclable it was ok, but I felt bad tossing them.

Your memory is excellent. I just googled Chloramine (NH2Cl) and it
is a nightmare for dw makers. Many municipalities are switching to
it since it is more robust and lasts longer than plain chlorine.
Boiling doesn't affect it, and it is not removed by distillation.
