Greetings and welcome Lea Ann,

Sorry things are a bit scattered for the moment and no one else has
offered to address your questions yet.

> Questions are:

> 1) Will my nebuliser work?

I looked at it. I think it would, but remember that as soon as you step
outside "doctor's orders" you *are* experimenting and there's no
guarantees.

I've not used a compressor-type nebulizer. I have an ultrasonic. I
assume you put the liquid in a small chamber and it's drawn out via a
tube into the airflow to the mask? If it can deliver a fine mist, it
will probably work for CS.

> 2) Where can I find information on how to SAFELY nebulise (how to avoid
> breath-stopping reactions).

I'll ask other members to share any thoughts they have on this.

If you're concerned about possible reactions, you should start with an
oral test of just a drop or two of CS on the tongue, to see if there is
any strange response waiting to pounce on you.

Then try another, slightly bigger dose, then work up to teaspoons and
tablespoons, and beyond, until you're starting to see the effect you
want. Just don't rush, so you have a chance to build up to any kind of
reaction slowly and safely.

If you're experiencing an active, serious bacterial infection, taking
any effective antimicrobial may cause a Herxheimer reaction, which can
be dangerous if severe enough, as I think you already realize.

Same thing with nebulizing. Be very conservative with your initial
experiment. Take only a very small, partial breath, then wait a good
while. Try again if it seems to be okay. Don't rush.

I am not sure you will "find information on how to SAFELY nebulize" as
you're hoping for, as none of us is professionally qualified to say
much of anything, and can only share our own experiences.

> 3) How does oxygen increase the effectiveness of nebulised CS.

I think someone posted a couple of links to articles on Brooks
Bradley's airbrush nebulizer idea. That's where we learned about a
simple and inexpensive type of nebulizer that's relatively easy to home-
brew and may even be superior to some kinds of commercial equipment, in
that it produces a finer mist.

Now, recall, this was at a time when nebulizers tended to be big, loud,
expensive, and frequently unavailable without a prescription, so
nowadays the incentive to home-brew might be somewhat less.

Brooks group found, however, that the Oxygen component actually helped
the CS to work, apparently, in that the outcome for those test subjects
was superior to that with only air.

Now, can we say *why* this is so? Probably not. It could just be a
benefit of inhaling oxygen. It could be some unknown synergy with the
CS. Or it could be something else entirely.

Also, I think I recall Brooks mentioning that one subject was an
elderly man with pneumonia, who reacted very strongly. Once he'd
managed to cough up massive amounts of phlegm, he started to improve
dramatically, but it was touch and go for a while. That's what you're
trying to avoid, obviously.

I'd say take it very slow at first. If after you've considered all the
information you can find you are still in doubt, by all means consult
your physician.

You want to be confident before you begin to experiment on yourself and
loved ones. Only you can decide when that is true.

Let us know what you learn, and what you decide to try, okay?

Be well,

Mike D.
