Hi Sue, If you're using Trem's machine, there's a good chance the Tyndall effect will be fairly subtle. You'd probably have to view it in a darkened room if you are to see it at all, so that is one more thing to try if you haven't yet. As you say, it's not crucial.
What is sludge? I think your question is in response to Ken's remark "between a few ppm and sludge...?" I'll give you two answers: One kind of "sludge" we might mention is the fluffy build-up of silver metal and oxide particles that'll form on your negative electrode if you let the machine run for a real long time. Don't stir the stuff in and drink it, but don't be paranoid if you get a few tiny bits, either. Further in that direction, the *other* answer has to do with a Libertarian US Senate candidate from Montana who made the national news a couple of years back, complete with doctored photographs, when somebody noticed he looked a little odd under studio lights during a debate. Whereas the obviously photoshopped pictures made him look like a punked- out Papa Smurf with electric blue skin and orange hair, he in fact had an extremely mild case of argyria. He got that way by taking bad advice on how to make CS, adding several mistakes of his own, and then drinking an awful lot of it. He was using tap or well water, *adding* salt to it, cooking it for an hour or more with an unregulated generator, then drinking the opaque sludge he'd created by the glassful, every day for 2 or 3 years!!! If you work that hard at it, yes, you stand a very good chance of developing argyria. Even so, his case is rather mild. So much so that I don't believe he's concerned about it.
