I would still be glad to see some information to support the claims, if you can find anything.

Having said that, the most relevant and useful stat., I think, is the overall infection rate of a nation.

In Memphis, Tennessee, in the 1980's, the county epidemiologist projected an AIDS rate of about 10% for the city. Fortunately he was wrong. Had he been right, the area would be like parts of Africa today -- an unmitigated disaster. Fortunately, the rate is actually less than one percent, despite very high rates of other STDs.

If by "some areas" of Japan, if we are talking about, say, a two-block stand of "soap land" brothels, sure, you might find a very high infection rate.

There also pockets of IV drug users -- mostly abusers of stimulant drugs, some heroin addicts. Among these folks, too.

Here is a link to a recent article that corresponds with my understanding. Nothing suggests an 85% infection rate even among prostitutes, but if you can find some published information, I will keep it on file.
