Kallie, you should always send anything of this sort in private e-mail.
Please. I've seen a couple of incidents like this in the last couple of
days, so I'm going to use your specific case to remind everyone about
the list rules for commercial activity.

As stated in the list rules at http://www.silverlist.org ... vendors of
various sorts are permitted to participate in the list provided that
they are acting as private individuals and not as representatives of
their business interests.

This should manifest itself in several ways:

* They should restrict obvious advertising and self-promotion to the
signature file at the end of their messages, and that be discrete even
at that.

* They should always list at least *several* alternatives in addition
to their own product or service, if ever offering it as a suggestion,
to give the recipient a head start on their own research.

* They should not comment on the quality or claims of any other
product, or make such statements for their own.

* They should emphasize their personal experience and the things
they've seen directly, and never quote marketing claims to us.

* They should be helpful toward people out of the same generosity that
motivates the rest of us, and any possible benefit to their business
should come after that.

* Ultimately, we may know them to be vendors, but we should be able to
value them as contributing members of the community, first and
foremost.

So, any business-related communications *must* be handled via private e-
mail. Since it's inevitable that another member will occasionally ask
business related questions on the list, it will be the vendors'
responsibility to know how to make sure that their answers take the
discussion private. So you'll have to learn how to pull the correct
address out of list message headers in order to send private mail. Let
me know if any of you need help with that.

Anyway, Kallie, thank you for helping out. I know that most of the
attributes of a good vendor/member I describe above apply to you just
fine. I only need to remind you, and others, just like I quietly
reminded Marshall a day ago, about the restrictions on commercial
activity on the list, so that we'll never end up with competing
commercial interests slugging it out right in the middle of everything.

Okay, folks! Back to your regularly scheduled discussion! <grin>

Be well,

Mike Devour
list owner and ... umm, nevermind.
