Actually what happens is that you make a battery.  With the silver and aluminum
in contact, you have produced a shorted battery.  Current flows, the sulfur
causing the tarnish migrates over to the aluminum, causing aluminum sulfide and
restoring the silver to being ure metal.

Actually baking soda works as well.
